The Cardinal Santos Medical Center's (CSMC) Department of Pediatrics embodies the kind of family-oriented care that the hospital is known for. The Department’s 110 pediatricians are at the forefront of efforts that made CSMC a “Mommy-Baby Friendly” hospital.
The hospital’s pediatric midwives and nurses are trained in lactation. Mothers can breastfeed their newborn even if the baby has been admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Preterm babies are encouraged to undergo kangaroo care. This is a technique where the infant is placed at direct skin-to-skin contact with the mother. This restores the physiological and psychological bond, allows easy breastfeeding for the preterm infant, and helps stabilize the infant’s body temperature more smoothly than an incubator.
The Department of Pediatrics cares for the sickest of patients. In addition to fragile preterm infants, our pediatricians also strive to give the best care for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients.
In partnership with the Comprehensive Cancer and Research Center, the Department’s pediatric cancer ward looks more like a playground. Children receiving treatment can still enjoy life while battling cancer.

These include diseases of the heart, lungs, bone, kidney, endocrine system (e.g. thyroid), digestive system, as well as a number of cancers.
The Section has two gamma cameras, which detect radiation from the tracers and converts these signals into images. Unlike x-rays, CT scans and MRIs that show the structure of organs, the images from nuclear medicine techniques also show the function of the diseased organ.
