Global Handwashing Day 2019: Clean Hands for All

October 15, 2019

Cardinal Santos Medical Center participated in the Global Handwashing Day last October 15, 2019, as it promoted the relevance of Infection Control as an integral part of the institution’s operations. Held at the hospital’s main lobby, the event was attended by the Senior Management Team and CSMC employees.

Hand hygiene is described by many health care workers as the single most important tool in preventing the spread of health care-associated infections between patients. Hands should be cleaned before & after direct patient contact, and immediately after touching contaminated surfaces.

To kickstart the activity, a vivacious dance number was presented by an ensemble of Caring Cardinal Leaders coming from different departments. Atty. Pilar Nenuca P. Almira, CSMC’s President and CEO, and Dr. Zenaida M. Javier-Uy, the Senior Vice President & Chief Medical Officer, led the proper hand washing demonstration.

This can be done with soap and water using the following technique:

1.       Rub hands palm to palm

2.       Right palm over left backhand with interlaced fingers and vice versa

3.       Palm to palm with fingers interlaced

4.       Backs of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked

5.       Rotational rubbing of left thumb clasped in right palm and vice versa

6.       Rotational rubbing backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of right hand in left palm and vice versa

With the support of the San Juan government, it was reiterated by the City Health Officer, Dr. Rosalie Sto. Domingo, that the implementation of infection control policies and procedures ensures the minimization & protection against infectious diseases and infections. A Handwashing Commitment Board was created and signed by the ManCom members to indicate CSMC’s full commitment to hand washing. As a reminder of this simple yet crucial act, soaps were given away to all the attendees.
